You were taught it was good in kindegarten. Why's sharing so bad now?

Ok, so, I want to continue a thought here from the end of that last post.

Given the number of times we've seen people go stark berbuggered over privacy settings and such on LJ, I need to ask this-

Since when did sharing become such a Bad Thing to you folks?

Seriously. When has increased exposure, sharing new stuff, new ideas, and meeting other cool folks online become the Enemy? Why do you fear it so? Hells, why are you posting stuff online that you don't want folks reading in the first place? Are we forgetting one of the simple basic rules of internet use? Once you've posted it online, you've posted it forever, and to everyone? It's not like the new tools are really that much of a violation anyways- they're opt-in, and they're certainly no worse than simply copy-and-paste, which ANYONE could use in general to make your day a whole hell of a lot worse than just posting the first 140 characters of a comment.

Tools aside, though, I've seen this attitude cropping up more on DeviantArt and LJ, among other places- and it just plain baffles me- if people use these tools, and if you use them, then you're reaching out to more people. How exactly is that a bad thing?  Tell me, please.

Well, here's a thought.

You post art here, protected so that you know, nobody sees it, as of course you'd prefer to control your work. Someone posts a comment. Their comment is linked with Facebook. Facebook now republishes your content. As your content has now been posted on or in connection with Facebook, Facebook now has a "non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, worldwide license" to your content.

Hope they don't decide to make t-shirts.



Yes, this rests on "in connection with" and whether or not it "counts". Wanna risk it?

So this is partly about FB and it's Land Grab Attitude - I don't have any problem with sharing with individuals, but I post things here that I don't want FB claiming they own!

Additionally, the retweet/repost of a comment means that a locked post still has some if it's content showing - I lock *very* rarely, but when I do, I want it to *stay* locked. When it's locked, it's being shared with folks I know who don't plan to share it. When tweeted or fb'kd, a good 100 words of it will show up. Not what I signed up for.

I'm all for sharing - just not locked posts or with Land Grabbers.

Well, as we demonstrated earlier, the sharing system is busted in that protected content can be shared out with out the consent of the person who originally posted it. And since people can turn it on for every comment they make, it can happen without them being aware that it is happening.

Now I actually want a system that will allow me to publish what I want to so that who ever I want to see it on what ever platform they choose to see it on. What I don't like here is that it takes control away from me by allowing the few commenters I have the ability to distribute my content to people I don't want to see it, without my permission.

There are two solutions I see:

1) prevent comments from locked posts from being shared. Not perfect since of course a post can go from unlocked to locked and vice versa.

2) Allow me to turn a comment I make on your LJ into a post on my LJ if I want to share it with everyone else.

At the same time people were teaching me about 'the goodness of sharing', I was also being taught about 'discretion beinfg the better part of valor'. My journal is not completely public there are a few things and people I do not want to know everything.

By the same token, there are things I do not commit to writing/text.

I have a creepy ex boyfriend who thinks it is perfectly acceptable to xyberstalk me and make veiled threatening comments. I like to make things a little more difficult for him.

Oh, I have a simple answer to that; I am an absolute Fascist about who I share what with, when I share it with them, how much of it I share with them. This is not up to debate or the opinion of others. If it offends others they have my condolences but not my apology. The de-friend button is always right there for them.
