Look - whoever the cat is fondest of must put on an old shirt. Sweat your heart out in said shirt. Put the shirt in an open cardboard box and leave it some yards away from the home. Check frequently.
I gave this advice to a woman in a forum whose cat took off after a recent move. It seemed like a good idea. The logic was sound. It worked.
