Ok, jury's still out on the laptop. Part of it is the simple fact that I should've posted before ust what I need to run on it, all of which ran pretty well on this system, even before I upgraded he memory from it's original 128. Here's the list:

Open Office
Acid
Photoshop
Soundforge

Fruityloops and some of the other big programs I'd be keeping on the main system, but those are the primary ones I'd be using on the laptop- hence, no need for an uber-system. Plus, I only have a busget of about $650- which generally means either a really cheap or used system from somewhere like craigslist (where you can't always trust the condition of stuff). Anyways, I'll put it to you guys:

I'm not a fan of off-brand laptops. They're cheap in the short run, but in the long run if anything breaks you're screwed. I know you have a $650 budget, but if I were spending money I would buy a dell or compaq/hp with a 3 year service contract and use a promotional credit (like 0% apr for 3 years) to pay for the thing over time.

That's my opinion.

Also, check costco's prices. We're members, and I'd be happy to let you in on our membership. They often have really good deals.
