Maybe they aren't territorial exactly - maybe they are programmed for dominance, to ensure survival of the fittest. Rather than defending turf, they are defending their right to breed exclusively.
Maybe repairs and other menial or technical tasks are done by a symbiotic/inferior species that has been victimized by a virus. Perhaps they are tiny - some kind of nanotechnology. Maybe the aliens need these symbiotic organisms or whatever to stay alive. I am thinking about tropical rainforests, in which rodents help ensure spore density in the ground - essential in the health of rainforest trees.
