In addition to everything Winneganfake said about the factory production of materials used to make the supposedly artisanal steampunk gear you're talking about, there's the fact that the steampunk movement, by definition, romanticizes the industrial revolution and the huge machinery associated with it. Sure, there may be a lot of do-it-yourselfers in the community, but that's only because you can't yet buy this stuff mass-produced. Just like Goth and Punk in the early years, as soon as it catches on, you'll be able to buy cheap steampunk crap for way too much money at Hot Topic or the equivalent thereof. And then your theory of why steampunk is green will be right out the window. I'm not saying that steampunk can't be environmentally friendly, but I am saying that the possible green-ness of the movement is not inherent in the movement, it's a choice made by some of the people who participate.
