Most of the following is theory, based on what we've learned from the crashed Hive Ship. And, unfortunately that proved to be a dead end as the ship didn't even contain so much as a single corpse that could be positively identified as belonging to a species intelligent enough to create the army we now face. The explosions that destroyed the ship centered on the engine and weapon systems, but enough of the blast must have been funneled into the room we think is the bridge of the ship to kill it's one occupant. But based on the rest of our data, we've come to some conclusions:
- The X are a highly telepathic race, existing in part in some kind of “hive mind” structure, like ants or bees. Unlike our analogy to insects, the X seem to be all “queens,” that is, they are all capable of independent thought as well.
- The aliens are also highly territorial- hence why only one to each Hive Ship. The crashed ship proves this theory further: a three-mile-long vessel, equipped with thousands of mecha, chambers of spore pods for alien plantlife, rooms of eggs, but only one space for a single occupant to control the entire ship from. The X will also fight to preserve their own territory, it seems, which would explain why we have sometimes observed fights occurring among their own orbital vessels. (Possibly an internal struggle in their own power structure if they have one?)
- For all intents and purposes, the aliens could choose to live on our world. Their atmosphere is similar to ours, and the food they eat now grows freely on our planet.
- While the aliens do have much more powerful technology than our own, they have nothing resembling any kind of repair or salvage facility. Downed mecha are left where they lie, and injured or crippled mecha and ships are ignored. Perhaps the technology to generate their mecha and ships is the only thing they understand, with no concept that damaged constructs could be repaired?
