For a bunch of reasons (winner-take-all, non-parliamentary system, etc.) our national voting system is only stable as two parties--so say the Republicans do marginalize themselves into minor party status. The Democrats will then drift (further) right to occupy the space the Republicans did, and either a Republican refugee/Democrat splinter faction or a center-left Democrat/Green alliance party springs up to take over being centrist.
