Books: CJ Cherryh's Foreigner Series - there's at least 9 of them and they're all wonderful (tho I admit to a personal fondness for the first 6 :>). Brilliant 1st contact material.
TV: Fringe - well written, Jon Noble worth watching anytime. Can find on Hulu. And for sheer amusement, Krod Mandoon (comedy channel).
