a good chunk of the songs getting slashed due to time, Depp's inability to sing, and M. Burton's need to insert dripping gore instead of some impassioned acting.
Seriously- Burton's film pretty much is the Hot Topic version- all the flashy style that was never a part of the film, and a sever reduction of the substance. Makes it look great sandwiched next to a mass-produced Alchemy Gothic-knock off rosary.
Hell, let's compare a bit. Better yet, hit play on each of these, and shut your eyes directly after.
Damn. The quality sucks on it, but it's the only decent sample of Cariou's rendition of Epiphany that I could find. At any rate- look at the portrayals. Depp reduces Sweeney to a two-bit murderer. Cariou's version? Depth. Passion. A killer driven by pure unbridled lust for vengeance. A man still in mourning for both his wife and daughter. A complex fucking character.
Throw in other changes made for the movie version, such as the removal of the best opening fucking sequence ever for a company chorus to perform, and well, there you have it- Burton's Sweeney Todd- a castrated, two-dimensional shadow of its former self.
Hell, if I can ever get my hands on a CD copy of the Cariou version, I'll gladly start sending it around to people, just so they can hear what got missed from the original.
