Some of you might remember the good old anime Casshan: Robot Hunter. Good epic cheese- robots destroying robots, all the sugar-loaded goodness of a Saturday morning loaded with early nineties anime.

Well, if you hadn't heard, it got a remake. And an update from anime to live action with a serious CGI overlay. So, how is it? Worthy. It's still epic cheese- there's unexplained plot holes big enough for a cruiser to sail through, but my god- it's pretty. Part steam/cyber-punk, part propaganda poster. The use of effects does git a bit much in some places, but otherwise it pulls it off well. As for the storyline, it updates and reinvents the old storyline, and does it in a fairly decent manner, adding a couple of extra dramatic layers to it that really make the storyline pop. All in all, good movie- definitely rent it when you get the chance, if you're in the mood for some good brain candy.

Ok, the wonderful Netflix "We think you'll like this movie!" suggestions actually hit the nail right on the damn head for once.

Qwoemul: The Host

Part comedy, part drama, part classic horror tropes and modern (well, maybe two or three years out of date) FX, and all MONSTER.

Basic gist: chemical dumping in the Han river ends up creating a nightmarish critter that's out to devour anyone in it's way. As the area get sealed off under the threat of quarantine, one family attempts to rescue the lost family member that has been unknowingly trapped by the monster.

It's good. It's basic, classic, and predictable. But it does it all so well that you're willingly sucked in, right down the thing's maw.

Rent it. Most definitely.

So, for those Silent Hill fans out there who didn't catch it when I mentioned the Silent Hill: No Escape project before, there's actually a fairly well done SH fan film out there. Anyways, the guy responsible for No Escape has now also released a BitTorrent containing a DVD_burnable version of the film (with all six parts combined, I'm hoping) for free download. If you like it, definitely throw him some donations for support, simply because fan projects like this need to continue.
