I've discovered something that truly pisses me off on a personal level.

I'm posting it as a general warning, and a combined vent at the same time.

Do not treat me like I do not have a day job. Do not even suggest that I don't.

This is my day job:

It's rewarding, I love it, but it's one hell of a commitment (no benefits, no financial recompense, no vacations, and I'm not allowed to quit.) and it generally is hard to do some of the things I would've done if I were here sans day job.

This is my work on a bad day:

Which happens quite regularly right now as the office manager is currently teething. Which means that sometimes it's hard to get out the door to grab breakfast even, because the office manager is crying, fussing, and thrashing about so much it's hard to get her into her car seat.

Cute babypics aside, do not fucking treat me as if I am unemployed, without a life, or otherwise able to do anything a non-employed person would do.

I have a fucking job. And it takes more energy, determination, and sheer bollocks than some of you will ever posess.

(end rant)

Heh.

You sound like my mom circa 1975.

Right on. -_^

What gets me is that people who work as nannies and child care providers get sympathy (as well as a paycheck). No one would dare suggest that they take off for a couple hours to grab a cup of coffee or run errands. Yet, when it's your own child, people think you do nothing all day except lay around watching television.

Funny, I feel the exact same way about doing art for a living. People seem to think that because it's "just art" and not a "real job" I can drop everything and run about wildly. I even got this from my studio mates (before they were all relegated to being my "clients") to the tune of "WELL I HAVE A DAY JOB I DON'T HAVE TIME FOR ART". Um, hey, art IS my fucking day job, thank you very much. It's how I pay the bills. Does that make it less important or less valid than the way you pay the bills?

Working at home, whether you're making art or raising a family, or fucking forbid, BOTH, is stigmatized in our society. America is so funny, we have such a love/hate relationship with authority. No one wants to pay their taxes or their parking tickets, but someone sees someone else living and working without a "boss" and a "time clock" they must be some kind of dangerous social misfit or bonbon eating soap watching hausfrau.

You have the toughest job I know of. And most folks only have to work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. You work 24/7. People who haven't done that just don't understand what it's like.

When my babies were little, I stayed home with them. Dang, they are almost out of the house now, and I *STILL* feel like I should be home with them.

I so know how you feel. And I remember what it felt like to be treated as if I were a brainless, jobless barefoot-n-pregnant stereotype.

You keep doing what you are doing. As long as you can.

You rock.

Right on for you.

I know what it's like, when I get home from work my job continues as well.

I raise my hands high for the words of truth and agree with you whole heartedly.

You do an amazing job. I am working part time and taking care of my neice. She is the most important, which is why I am with her as much as possible. I am amazed at how much you do with your art, taking care of the sweet hart and so much more. I hope to be more like you someday. ::grin::
