Well, I'm back from the movies.

Part of me liked it, part of me didn't.

It was a really well done horror movie. It had the look of Silent Hill down to every last bolt, rust spot, and bloodstain. And I loved the transition sequences.

But the plotline changed a lot of Silent Hill's backstory. Not in a bad way, it's just way the hell different from what it was before. The SH atmosphere was still there throughout, just the facts and circumstances were altered. And the ending? Definitely good SH material. So all over, not bad, just different. It's like ordering a coke slurpee and getting a blue rasberry one instead. They're both good, and they're both slurpees, but it's still just not quite what you were expecting.

The only thing I was disappointed in was the soundtrack. I thought it'd be great to have Akira Yamaoka (who did the original videogame soundtracks) on the film handling the score. What I didn't realize was that by "handling the score," all they reall meant was "editing existing tracks from the games for time and speed to go with the movie scenes." I would've loved to have heard some of the tracks they used beefed up by a full range of instruments. Or even some new compositions specifically for the movie. Ah well. Anyways, back to the real world, job hunting, writing and painting for the rest of the week.

Other than a movie, what is Silent Hill?

Precisely.

Is it just me, or were they just using the monsters to use them, rather than as the more metaphoric forms they're supposed to be?

Ehhh, I dunno, I think that for the most part they work, though not in the same context as in the games.

Demon Children: The other children who tormented Alessa in school, ever attacking and thrown in torment.

Spitters: Could be used as a representation of Burned Alessa, spewing forth evil and pain from within their prison

Roaches: The evil townspeople that died in the fire, insects among men, unable to think for themselves.

Pyramid Head: The Molestor turned executioner (note they were played by the same actor). As young Alessa was molested and had her life ripped in two, Burned Alessa has PH out there doing the same to the people who allowed it to happen.

I think it's mostly PH that bugs me. Just because there's nothing in the movie's content to support his look or even his existence- there's nowhere in the film that we see anything about the executioners, so it just doesn't quite work.

Meh, I think Pyramid Head was really must more of a nod to the fans. He's really the most celebrated 'monster' in all of the games, and works well enough that most fans are willing to let it slide.

Have you seen the latest Penny Arcade? They're pretty scathing.

I hadn't until you mentioned it.

Wow.

Yeah, the movie, like any other videogame movie, is going to definitely polarize the more hardcore fans.

Only this time I think there'll be more people in the "I liked it" category for once. That could just be me though.
