In other unrelated news, kneadatite still sticks to every substance in existence. Including the ones it's not supposed to.

So, say I'm working on a stick. Kind of a cane/swagger stick inspired design. And I need a knob for the end of the thing. (god, this sounds far more sexual than it actually is.) Now, I could just take item x, and stick it on there with epoxy resin, but I'd rather go for more than one kind of attachment to the cane-body. Anyone with a knowledge of hardware stores- is there such a thing as a handle or knob typically available that could just be screwed directly into the top of the cane, without extra bits, tools, or further points of attachment?

Gah, this probably makes zero sense to anyone reading it, but well, if you're not sure what I mean, then please, ask.

Depending on the materials you are using to make the cane you do something similar to a drawer pull (cabinet knob) and have item x have a screw on the end.

That's the problem- I already have the cane half of things, which suffered a break at one point. The break's been artfully repaired now, but I'm afraid that fucking about with the remaining structure might cause another break. So, whatever the knob is, it needs to be able to screw directly into the cane without benefit of a third party piece.

Can you drill a hole in end of cane?

That I should be able to do without too much trouble.

What is the knob made of?

I did something similar when I needed to make my cane for my Alex costume one Halloween (think Clockwork Orange). Took a longish wooden dowel, drilled a pilot hole in one end and then got a round post top and screwed that into the pilot hole and secured it with some wood glue. Darn thing is still around almost 8 years later.

Other things that work well other than doorknobs - finials for posts or drapery-rod end hardware.

Generally if you can get a pilot hole in the end you can attach just about anything.

Could you use a headless bolt or screw to attach a handle or knob? Maybe a drop of epoxy on both ends to ensure that it doesn't come unscrewed.

I second the curtain-rod or newel-post finial suggestion. If you find the right shape out there, it's often easy to refinish/paint/glam up in various ways.

Failing that, check the exotic hardware section of a good hardware store (or your local Home Despot/Lowes); it's often a drawer right next to the not-exotic nuts/bolts/screws drawers. It ought to have these critters which are basically screws, but both ends are male, & they come in various sizes. They aren't free (usually around $.50 per), but also aren't hideously expensive.

Even with that, some form of epoxy is a good supplement, particularly if it's going to be subjected to a lot of shear.
