Son of a.....

Ok, I admit it- I liked John C Wright's writing. Specifically on the "...of Chaos" trilogy. And enough to get the wife into reading them as well.

After reading an LJ post of his, however, I'm glad to have only checked those books out of the library, and I'm glad that we haven't spent a dime picking up any of his works new or used. This guy needs to be humbled. Hopefully infamy, followed by poverty will be a good way to start.

(And thanks for the linkage goes to [livejournal.com profile] naamah_darling.)

That's incredibly disappointing. Thanks for the heads-up; I'll definitely be avoiding his stuff from now on.

I've heard that from a number of folks -- his writing is marvelous, but he is an absolutely intolerant ass who is very vehement in opposition to anything that is contrary to his Catholic belief system...

According to Wiki, he converted from atheism to Catholicism late in life. I guess that it's the late convert who's stereotypically filled with absurd zeal... :(

"There is no greater zealot than a convert."
Don't know the attribution, but that quote has been in my life for a very long time.

I'd comment on his post but well, trying to teach a pig to sing wastes your time and annoys the pig.

Although in this case it would annoy both of us.

Well, the Constitution does give us the right to say anything we want to, even if it is filth. *sigh*

It was the heterosex that f*cked up my life...

I'm with [livejournal.com profile] darkmane - no point in annoying everyone by trying to talk sense over there.

He really, however, needs to become acquainted with another rather staunchly right-wing catholic to learn argumentation - while his arguments within themselves are decently logical (if not decent), his premises lack the logical basis to carry them. As Bill (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_F._Buckley,_Jr.) often said "if I can get you to accept my premise, I cannot lose the argument."

Let us note that I do not accept any of Mr. JCW's premises. Therefore, he cannot *win* the argument.

I simply don't understand people that *hate* that much. It doesn't even matter who they are or what it is that they hate...I just don't get it.

Have you read his more recent posts? He appears to repent the scorn and sarcasm while not shifting from his position that homosexuality is a sexual perversion and sinful.

And, you know? I'm okay with that. The kind of okay that would make me want to have coffee with him to hear how he came to his position. I mean, Orson Scott Card is a gibbering mound of hate. This guy's latest posts points to a reasonableness that both the right and the left could use.

Personally, while I'm somewhat all right with it, his tone (and it could just be me reading between the lines) doesn't exactly come off as apologetic. And I have yet to see an actual straightforward apology from the man. Give me that much, and I can get on some level of respecting him. Respecting him as a human being on the other hand will have to wait until he's capable of recognizing that I am indeed human myself, rather than a perverted animal.

Sorry- I'm tired and coming off a bit harshly on that, but honestly? I have zero sympathy for what he got with this one.

Hal Duncan has a good response to him here (http://notesfromthegeekshow.blogspot.com/2009/08/open-letter-to-john-c-wright.html).

Yep- caught that one earlier today, and I must admit, I love it. Though I also love the "closed letter" reply that naamah did in her own journal today as well.

Both of them though, while I love them for tone and thought, will, I think, have little to no effect on this kind of wingnut. I especially love that he's now deleted his original post and moved on to some rather backhanded attempts at apologizing.

Yeah, I just read hers. But you're right -- they won't have any effect on him -- people spouting idiocy like that can't coexist with rational thought, so they act like it doesn't exist (rather like Fox News, come to think of it).
