As a quick reminder to folks- today is the day for the daughterling's Jog-A-Thon at Greenwood Elementary.

Why do you want to support this? Because you like people who have a decent education. You like people who are knowledgeable about the arts. About science. Who had teacher who gave enough of a fuck that making sure the kids learned things was important. That's what supporting these kids and supporting a PTA program gets you in the end- kids with a decnet education, and a better chance of them becoming teenagers and adults that we don't want to punch on sight.

Because learning is important, and this is one of the few ways out there to help it happen.

For those who haven't met her yet, this is my daughter, Brenna:

She's full of awesome. And her school wants to be able to do awesome stuff, like having arts and music programs. To keep doing that though, they also have to have money to do it with. Which means regular fundraising events, like this one.

So, to start off the school year, Brenna's elementary school (Greenwood Elementary) is having their Jog-a-Thon on October 22nd. What's a Jog-a-thon? It's where they let the kids run. And run. And run some more, like the hamsterlike perpetual-motion engines that they are. It's a load of fun for them, and they've got challenges and I believe some prizes for those who run enough laps.

I know most of us are tight with funds, but, even if you've got the ability to donate even just a buck or two, that would be awesome. All the money the school raises from the Jog-a-Thon and other events goes to support a part time art teacher, after school clubs and other things to help make their school a place we really like.

And, this year we've got a pledge site for Brenna to make donating easier, if you can give a set donation:

And, if you want to want to do a per lap fee, let me know and we can figure it all out. I know Brenna ran 17 laps last year and she's been running around a lot more this summer, so, she may go over 17 this year. Either way, she's gunnign to run a bunch, and we're hoping that enough money gets raised this year to really help out with stuff at her school.

Ok, guys, so I may have bit the big one here.

A few months ago, I started checking out the graphic novels of Bone from the library, just to see what all the rave reviews were about. Brenna looked through some of them, and immediately proceed to beg and plead at me until I started reading them to her. So, I did. And she got hooked on it, and on the format in general. Since then, we've bought and read cover-to-cover now, the entire big omnibus edition linked above. And now? She wants more comics. Lots more. And my graphic novel collection's a bit too adult for a five year old- so, anyone got any good recommendations for good graphic novels? Preferably no capes- I'd like her to stick to good, deep stories and adventures before she really starts getting hooked into the superhero stuff. (Yes, I know there's some superhero stuff that does have good, deep plotlines and adventures, but most of it that does, isn't kidsafe.)
