I'd say yes, but, well, when I'm up at this hour, it typically means I'm working on writing, painting, or digital art stuff. Which means that distractions (like IM windows) tend to either annoy me or downright piss me off, depending on the situation. I leave it on, just in case I'm getting a contact from someone that has relevance to what I'm doing, but IMs just to say "hi" at this hour usually get terse to rude responses from me.
Unfortuneately, I grew up in the age of MTV. I know lyrics to Bon Jovi, as well as Poison, Ratt, and Madonna. Although I think your idea is an excellent mantra to live by 20 years later.
