Links for the general enjoyment:

[livejournal.com profile] rimrunner's serial Halloween fiction, The Thinning Veil can be found here, and it's definitely worth the time to go read and follow for the rest of the month.

Bill Geerhart's rather interesting letter project, aka "Dear Charles Manson," is also definitely worth a read.

veryone needs to play with this. Though I think I'm scared to see the movie itself.

Useful research here- the database of native plantlife for Washington state. Found mostly because, well, moving into a house, gardening, etc.

Speaking of halloween, and listening and such, here, have a trip down amnesia lane: Relic Radio, which has tons of old radio broadcasts and such. definitely worth a listen.

Even better- here. Have an mp3 of the one broadcast that scared the shit out of everyone one Halloween night.

So you'll have gardening space at your new place? I have lots of flower seeds I can share if you want them. Just tell me if you have full sun, part shade, etc. and I can make you up a starter packet.

Yep, we'll have gardening, though the focus is going to be more on food than flowers (I'm allergic to most of the flowering half of the Northwest, so better to go for the stuff that has edible value at least.)

As for the mix, it's a bit of art and full sun for the most part. Biggest thing we'll need to find though is a quick growing ground cover- there's a ton of blackberry at the top edge of the front yard (it's on a rise) so we'll need a quick filler when we rip a chunk of that out- I want to avoid ending up with a front-yard mudslide. Any good suggestions?

*gulp* Blackberry?

Move elsewhere. *shudder*

Blackberry is impossible to get rid of. Ugh. Seriously. Unless you bring in heavy machinery and completely dig the entire area out to about 6 feet deep, there's no hope.

Sadly, I speak from experience. I still have the scars.

Nuh-uh. Besides, the gods wouldn't have given us fun things like dynamite, super-strong acids, fire and hatred unless we were supposed to use them on the blackberries, right?

Seriously- I'm not into removing the things- they make a decent defensive hedge at the top line of the yar that'll keep Brenna in and prying neighbors out. I do intend to keep those seriously trimmed back though, and I need some good ground cover for that hillside and the area under our rather large (and possibly dying) pine tree. The tree should be salvageable, so it just needs to be something that'll tolerate a lot of shade.

Not many things like to grow under pine trees. Azaleas and Rhodies do fine, and Camellias can do okay too, if you want shrubby things. If you want low-growing stuff, I recommend Vinca Minor. (Periwinkle)It's a creeper, spreads along the ground fairly quickly, and it's easy to pull up if it gets into places you don't want it. There's also ground ivy, which is nice, but can be harder to control.
